Where to Eat Vegan on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in L.A.
Too tired to prepare Christmas dinner after baking all those vegan cookies for Santa? Don’t go hungry or settle for an unexciting quick fix. These vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants are open for business on Christmas Eve, and a few will even feed you on Christmas Day. Make your reservations now or swing by a fast-casual spot while Santa makes his rounds.
Plant Food & Wine
Enjoy your Christmas Eve dinner snuggled in a blanket under twinkling white lights, looking up through the foliage at the stars. Somewhat removed from the bustle of Abbot Kinney is Plant Food & Wine, which will be serving a special Christmas Eve tasting menu for its guests. The restaurant is still working on finalizing the options, but we hope there’s a vegan cheese plate and the signature Heirloom Tomato + Zucchini Lasagna available!
Real Food Daily
West Hollywood and Pasadena
Breakfast for dinner on Christmas Eve? What about a pizza, a vibrant, veggie-focused build-your-own bowl, and lots of desserts to choose from too? For those who want options, Real Food Daily won’t disappoint. Be sure to order a few cookies for Santa and a chocolate Karma Baker cake slice for yourself to go.
This intimate, vegetarian (but mostly vegan) restaurant often gets overlooked due to its proximity to SunCafe, but it is one of the best hidden gems in the city. The menu is extensive, offering sides, salads, mains, and sandwiches, but as its name suggests, its vegetable-based small plates are where it’s at. Come with friends and order everything (or as much as you can). The restaurant is open Christmas Eve, but either make a reservation or arrive early—the kitchen often runs out if a particular dish is popular. Also, the restaurant doesn’t carry alcohol, but it does offer a corkage service.
True Food Kitchen
If you’re dining out with those who scoff at the idea of going to a vegan restaurant on Christmas Eve, True Food Kitchen offers a happy compromise. The vegan options are clearly marked, and there are plenty to choose from. Some favorites include the Charred Cauliflower, Ancient Grains Bowl (add tofu), and the Butternut Squash Pizza. And don’t leave without a slice of the Squash Pie—the portion is generous and it’s topped with a creamy mountain of vegan whipped cream. All locations in Los Angeles and Orange County close at 8pm that evening, and reservations are highly suggested.
Feast on some tachos and grab a beer or craft cocktail while waiting for Santa at Beelman’s. The all-vegan pub is open until 9pm on Christmas Eve, so swing by for an early night cap, then off to bed while Mr. Claus works his magic!
Rahel Ethiopian Vegan Cuisine
Keep the injera coming! Take a trip to Little Ethiopia and make a beeline for Rahel’s—the completely-vegan option amongst this unique community in the heart of Los Angeles. Don’t be intimidated by the menu—get a little bit of everything by ordering one of the special combination dishes. The kitchen can even do oil-free, if you call an hour in advance. While utensils are available upon request, the best way to eat these flavorful stews is by grabbing them with injera, a kind of spongy flatbread that serves as a staple in Ethiopian cuisine. Once you try it, you’ll be hooked.
Culver City and DTLA
Try the best this iconic vegan sushi restaurant has to offer on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day with its Christmas Special Tasting menu. The courses include five appetizers, a soup, and two or three sushi rolls (depending on the tasting package you order). The menu includes a few Shojin favorites like the Baked “Crab Cake” Hand Roll and Dynamite Roll 2.1, but don’t disregard the festive specials, like the White Christmas Soup or Christmas Special Sushi Roll. Reservations are required.
Doing some last-minute gift shopping at Beverly Center on Christmas Eve? Swing by Vegan Glory once you’ve found that perfect gift. This vegan, Thai-inspired restaurant is open until 10pm on that night, and the menu features everything from traditional larb salad to warming Thai soups. There’s also plenty of stir-frys, noodle dishes, curries, and even an Impossible Burger.
Cold winter nights call for comfort food, and you can always find some at Veggie Grill. From their seasonal specials to menu classics (looking at you, mac and cheese), this fast-casual vegan chain will set things right on Christmas Eve. Some locations close early, but the Hollywood location will be open regular hours and until 7pm on Christmas Day.
Craving a beer and pizza? Vegan-friendly Mohawk Bend is open until 8pm on Christmas Eve. Order your favorite vegan pies to go and host a pizza party while waiting for Santa to make his rounds. The kitchen also makes phenomenal vegan burgers, salads, and appetizers so you can invite the entire neighborhood.
Doomie’s Home Cookin’
Doomie’s is the place for late night vegan munchies in Los Angeles, and to uphold this reputation, this strip-mall diner just off Sunset and Vine is open regular hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Dive in to the oh-so-satisfying fast-food options on the menu, and be sure to grab an impossibly fudgy brownie for yourself and a slice of the Bavarian cake for Santa on your way out.
