Plant-based celebrity chef Matthew Kenney, a trailblazer in the world of vegan cuisine, is set to embark on an ambitious journey to expand throughout China. Known for his innovative restaurants like Double Zero, Plant Food + Wine, and the US-based food hall Plant City, Kenney is gearing up to introduce a series of plant-based food halls across major Chinese cities.

Expanding the Plant City Model Across China

Inspired by the success of Plant City in Providence, Rhode Island—the world’s largest plant-based food hall co-founded with Kim Anderson—Kenney aims to replicate the concept in China. Each food hall will feature 12-14 individual restaurants specializing in diverse plant-based cuisines, along with lifestyle retail spaces. Key cities on the radar include Guangzhou, Shanghai, Chengdu, Macao, and Shenzhen.

Among the distinctive concepts slated for launch are VEG’D, focusing on plant-based fast food, Double Zero presenting wood-fired pizza, and Ayre offering ayurvedic cuisine. These establishments are set to redefine the culinary landscape and make plant-centric living more accessible to a broader audience.

A Global Footprint of Flavor

With A-list fans such as Taylor Swift, Oprah, and James Cameron, Matthew Kenney has carved a niche for himself in the culinary world. Plant Food + Wine at the Four Seasons in Los Angeles and Double Zero in New York are celebrity hotspots, while his international ventures include Folia in Dubai, Plant Food + Wine in Lima, Peru, and Casa Planta in Costa Rica.

“As the public perception of plant-based eating continues to evolve and gain popularity around the world, I look forward to expanding Plant City across China,” said chef Matthew Kenney. “Our goal is to provide a one-stop destination for plant-based eating that will be appreciated by vegans, omnivores and carnivores alike. ”

The first food hall is anticipated to open in early 2025. For more information about Matthew Kenney’s restaurants, visit MatthewKenneyCuisine.com.
