West Hollywood's new policy mandates vegan food by default at city events to boost sustainability, health, and animal welfare.

In a momentous victory for animals, human health, and the planet, the City of West Hollywood has voted to pass a groundbreaking resolution aimed at reducing the environmental, public health, and animal welfare impacts of its food purchases. Spearheaded by Vice Mayor Chelsea Lee Byers, this new policy mandates that plant-based food and beverages be served by default at city-sponsored events and meetings, while animal products will be available only upon request.

Championing Change in West Hollywood

This policy, developed in collaboration with Mercy For Animals, addresses the urgent issues of climate change and animal suffering. Mercy For Animals staff, volunteers residing in West Hollywood, and other supportive organizations, including the Center for Biological Diversity and Greener by Default, actively mobilized and testified in favor of the policy.

Mercy For Animals CEO and president Leah Garcés, said, “Mercy For Animals calls for a shift to a plant-based food system, so we greatly appreciate Vice Mayor Byers for championing this policy change in West Hollywood. As more people choose plant-based food for their health, the environment and animals, Mercy For Animals works with local governments so that public purchasing reflects this shift. Mercy For Animals commends the City of West Hollywood’s commitment to serving plant-based food by default.”

Setting a Precedent

This policy represents a significant victory for Mercy For Animals in its mission to build a just and sustainable food system. Earlier this year, in February, the organization also collaborated with Los Angeles County—the most populous county in the United States—to enact legislation that promotes best practices in purchasing, selling, and serving more plant-based foods in the county’s food services.

Looking Ahead

West Hollywood’s new policy not only sets a precedent for other cities but also highlights the growing recognition of the benefits of plant-based diets. By prioritizing plant-based foods, the city is taking a crucial step towards a healthier, more sustainable future. This initiative stands as a testament to the power of community action and the importance of forward-thinking policies in addressing global challenges.
