Hey Sunshine Kitchen opens this July!

The iconic vegan sister duo behind Spork Foods just announced plans to open a vegan restaurant in Culver City! The news comes as a great surprise and delight to many LA vegans who know, love, and follow the Spork Foods sisters.

Heather Bell and Jenny Engel of Spork Foods

Vegan veterans of 23 years and counting, Heather Bell and Jenny Engel share their passion for plant-based foods in many formats through their company, Spork Foods. They got their start teaching vegan cooking classes in Los Angeles over 15 years ago and have expanded to host cooking demonstrations, publish vegan cookbooks—and now, open a restaurant!

“Our whole lives we’ve heard the same story. Opening a restaurant is the most foolish thing to do. For so many reasons, including how risky it is, we understand that. But we’re here on this earth for a reason, and that reason is to help animals, our planet, and all of her inhabitants, and to keep our human friends healthy using plant-based food as our teaching tool. This restaurant project isn’t something we chose. It chose US.

When we started teaching plant-based cooking classes in 2007, when the word vegan was still shunned, you showed up. You came to our tiny apartment in Silver Lake where you crammed around a tiny kitchen to learn how to make tofu taste good. You showed up again when we took a leap and moved our cooking school to a bigger space in West Hollywood. And we know you’ll show up for our most risky venture yet, Hey Sunshine Kitchen. So thank you for always supporting our most personal and passionate dreams. You had a BIG part in it and we’re beyond appreciative of every one of you and all you’ve done for our purpose,” Bell and Engel shared in an Instagram post.

And last but not least, there’s a vegan kids menu for littles!

Pollinator Initiative

Beyond protecting the earth by serving plant-based fare, Hey Sunshine Kitchen is partnering with Friends of Ballona Wetlands to showcase pollinator-friendly plants on their patio. As a way to invite the community to participate in their efforts, the restaurant will give a complimentary plant with the purchase of any entrée.
