The space previously occupied by Locavore in downtown Ubud, will now boast a fully vegan menu.

The Locavore Group has unveiled an exciting new addition to their culinary landscape in downtown Ubud. Opening this December, Herbivore promises a radical departure from conventional dining experiences, focusing solely on a celebration of locally sourced, plant-based cuisine. The announcement follows the closure of Locavore, the group’s original restaurant, after a decade of serving a menu catering to omnivores.

A Botanical Paradise: Herbivore’s All-Plant Approach

Replacing Locavore, Herbivore marks a significant shift, embracing an “all flora, no fauna” dining concept. Chef and owner Eelke Plasmeijer elaborated, stating, “Locavore always had a plant-based tasting menu available called Herbivore, and we are already pretty big on finding alternatives to animal protein as well as not using dairy. Taking the step to create a space that can focus on the celebration of local plants only makes a lot of sense to us.”

The Culinary Experience at Herbivore

Head chef Arnaud Hauchon has curated an enticing five- (lunch only) and seven-course tasting menu. Guests can opt for rice-based alcoholic beverages or meticulously crafted non-alcoholic pairings to complement their chosen tasting menu. Hauchon said, “Our debut menu is designed to be generous and comforting—a gentle, first culinary exploration of local flora, with bold and clean flavors from the island’s most iconic ingredients mingled with lesser known and wilder ones. It’s a warm welcome to restaurant Herbivore.”

Note: Some menu items contain honey, so be sure to request no honey.

Locavore NXT Coming Soon

Meanwhile, the closure of Locavore marks the group’s transition to their new venture, Locavore NXT, set to open in a different nearby location this December, offering a new chapter in the group’s culinary endeavors. While not exclusively plant-based, Locavore NXT will offer vegan options on their menu as well.
