The Black-owned soul food restaurant permanently closes its original location.

Attention East Michigan vegans, we’ve got some sad news for you. Detroit Vegan Soul (DVS) recently announced the closure of its historic West Village location. And while the all-vegan soul food restaurant’s second location will remain open, the DVS team is taking an extended winter break through April 2022.

Detroit’s Premier Fully Vegan Soul Food Restaurant

DVS ended 2021 by saying goodbye to its original restaurant located in the heart of Detroit’s West Village. The eatery first opened back in 2013 at 8029 Agnes Street and was known as Detroit’s premier fully-vegan soul food restaurant. The eatery sadly closed on December 31, 2021 due to staffing issues brought on by the pandemic.

“We’re proud that we accomplished our goals. We cooked up a food revolution! Not only is Detroit now on the map as a vegan destination with other vegan restaurants opening in the city, but West Village is a hip, bustling sought-after neighborhood. We’re proud to have been the trailblazer for these transformations,” co-owners Erika Boyd and Kirsten Ussery shared on the company’s Facebook page.

The restaurant’s second location, which opened back in 2017, will remain temporarily closed for an extended winter break with plans to reopen in April. The DVS team will be using this three-month period to reset and reframe their plans to better sustain the business moving forward. When the restaurant reopens, plant-based locals can expect more catering opportunities, new meal planning services, and the return of the popular Sunday brunch.

Detroit Vegan Soul’s Other Location

DVS menu mainstays have included the Oyster Mushroom Po Boy, Okra Stew, and Soul Platter, featuring “Catfish” Tofu, mac ‘n’ cheese, smoked collards, candied yams, black-eyed peas, brown rice, and a cornbread muffin all made from organic, plant-based ingredients. As sad as we are to see the West Village location go, we are excited to see what is in store for DVS come April 2022! Detroit Vegan Soul’s other location, and new home base, is located at 19614 Grand River Avenue, Detroit, MI 48223.
