The East Village’s beloved plant-based Soul Food hot spot welcomes a new executive chef.
James Beard Award-nominated restaurateur Ravi DeRossi and Overthrow Hospitality proudly announce Haley Duren as the new executive chef of Cadence, their celebrated plant-based Soul Food restaurant in Manhattan’s East Village. Chef Duren steps into the role with an innovative new menu that merges Southern soul with her Southwestern roots.
Chef Haley Duren’s Vision for Cadence
Taking over from Chef Shenarri Freeman, who established Cadence as a culinary landmark, Duren brings a wealth of experience from her tenure at PLANTA and other notable establishments like Dirt Candy and The Nomad.
"We're thrilled to welcome Chef Haley Duren to the Overthrow Hospitality family,” said DeRossi. “Her culinary vision aligns perfectly with our commitment to pushing the boundaries of plant-based dining. At the same time, we're immensely grateful to Chef Shenarri Freeman for her groundbreaking work in establishing Cadence as a beacon of vegan Soul Food."

A Fresh Take on Southern Cuisine
Duren’s new menu at Cadence is a celebration of bold, regional flavors. Dishes like the Wedge Salad with blue cheese dressing, shiitake bacon, and buffalo relish, and Fried Green Tomatillos with smoked feta and red chili hibiscus highlight her innovative approach. Signature items include the Lobster Mushroom Boil, Nashville Hot Sandwich, Cornmeal Rolls with smoked tomato jam, and desserts like Cobbler & Ice Cream featuring seasonal fruits and house-made compote.
Chef Duren said, “I’m so thrilled to be joining Cadence and look forward to introducing my new menu that continues to celebrate Southern flavors with my own unique culinary vision."
