San Diego’s Kindred to Open Tropical Space-Themed Vegan Bar

San Diego’s popular South Park cocktail bar and restaurant is establishing a permanent home for its weekly Thursday night pop-up. San Diego’s popular South Park cocktail bar and restaurant is establishing a permanent home for its weekly Thursday night pop-up. The tropical-themed Permanent Vacation event is transforming into Mothership—a brick-and-mortar just a few blocks away from Kindred that owner Kory Stetina describes as a “tropical space adventure bar.” The new concept will take over the space currently occupied by Del Sur Mexican Cantina, which will shutter by the end of this month.

Mothership is a few months away from opening—Stetina claims it will be ready for customers sometime in the fall or winter of 2021—but his concept is clear. The escapist, tiki-themed cocktail menu will be rum-heavy and directed by Kindred’s bar manager, David Kinsey, with help from Dannika Underhill—a Tiki Oasis Bartender Battle champion. The food menu will be completely unique to Kindred’s offerings, though the restaurant’s Instagram announcement promises a menu of vegan small plates that “exhibit a vibrant, playful, and experimental interplanetary fusion of ingredients and flavors.” Oh, and Dole Whip, because if that doesn’t define tropical escapism, what does?

The entire concept of Mothership resolves to provide more than just a fun cocktail menu and complementary vegan eats—it’s meant to tingle every one of its customers’ senses. From the retro-futuristic, custom-made soundtrack to the psychedelic, twisted tiki spin on decor, it’s bound to be an experience that exceeds more than just a typical mai tai buzz.

We will keep you updated on Mothership’s opening. In the meantime, Kindred is open seven days a week for dinner with extended morning hours for weekend brunch.
