We roll our eyes at the advice we heard as kids, then one day we wake up and realize some of it quietly built our backbone.

I’ve spent years toggling between data and day-to-day life.

Along the way, I noticed something funny.

A lot of the “boring” boomer wisdom I dismissed when I was 16 turned out to be ridiculously useful at 40.

“Be five minutes early,” I can hear my mom saying it while handing me car keys.

Punctuality used to feel like someone else’s power move.

I didn’t believe that line until a stretch of anxious months pushed me toward the nearest trailhead.

Movement became medicine before I had language for it.

You don’t have to run, walk, garden, bike to the store, or pull weeds for ten minutes.

The point is to put your body in the places that remind your mind it lives in something strong and capable.

4) Learn to cook simple meals and feed people

“Eat real food. Mostly plants,” well, that line gets quoted often because it works.

My boomer parents didn’t use that exact phrase, but they believed in making dinner at home, stretching leftovers, and feeding whoever wandered in.

Cooking is about agency; when you can feed yourself from basic ingredients, you buy health and hospitality at the same time.

You also sidestep a lot of marketing noise.

The grocery cart becomes a vote for what you want more of.

If you’re starting from scratch, pick three plant-forward meals you can make on autopilot.

For me it’s a sheet-pan veggie roast with chickpeas, a hearty lentil soup, and tacos built from sautéed mushrooms, black beans, and crunchy slaw.

They’re cheap, filling, and scale well when friends show up.

One of my favorite Saturday rituals is volunteering at a farmers’ market; talk to the growers and you’ll learn a semester’s worth of cooking in ten minutes.

“What do I do with this strange squash?” becomes a tour of simple techniques.

Roast, braise, and toss with olive oil and lemon.

Suddenly dinner is less a task and more a story.

When life goes sideways, bringing soup to a neighbor is love with a ladle.

5) Call people, write thank-you notes, and maintain relationships

“Pick up the phone.”

I can hear that one too.

Texts are efficient, yet voice and ink are connective.

The difference shows up over years; relationships run on small deposits of attention.

A quick call on a Tuesday, a postcard after a trip, and a thank-you note that names the specific thing someone did and how it helped you.

Try this experiment for a month: Each morning, scroll your contacts and choose one person to nudge.

Send a voice memo, not just a thumbs-up, or share one real sentence about why they crossed your mind.

That tiny practice keeps doors open that otherwise drift shut.

And the thank-you note? It is a secret career accelerator and a quiet friendship builder!

When someone mentors you, hosts you, or goes the extra mile, write an actual note.

I keep a small stack of cards and stamps near my desk for this reason.

Gratitude is easier when the tools are within reach.

A wise mentor once told me, “Networking is just being useful and staying in touch.”

Turns out our parents said the same thing with a rotary phone.

6) Take care of your stuff and fix what you can

“Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.”

That New England proverb made the rounds in my house.

It sounded stingy when I was craving the newest whatever.

Now it sounds like stewardship.

Caring for what you own is both environmental and emotional hygiene.

You buy fewer replacements, you waste less, and you also learn how things work, which spills into confidence in places you don’t expect.

Start with maintenance: Sharpen the dull knife, oil the squeaky hinge, wash the car yourself and you’ll notice the tiny crack in the tire before it becomes a roadside drama, and mend the loose button instead of ordering another shirt.

There is a quiet dignity in knowing how to keep things going and, if you can’t fix it, learn to dispose of it responsibly or donate what has life left.

Clutter is a tax on attention, while clearing it is a gift to your future mornings.

When you take care of your things, you also take care of the story of your life.

7) Turn off the screen at night and go to bed

“Nothing good happens after midnight,” I rolled my eyes at that one in college.

Now I translate it like this: Your 10 p.m. choices decide your 7 a.m. mood.

Sleep is the original performance enhancer.

It smooths edges, stabilizes appetite, and upgrades your decision-making.

For many of us, the enemy isn’t coffee after noon or some abstract insomnia.

It’s the blue-lit rabbit hole we fall into “for just one more minute.”

Try a simple rule for a week: No screens in bed, charge your phone in the kitchen, and read three pages of an easy novel or a cookbook instead.

If that feels too harsh, at least set your devices to grayscale after 9 p.m.

The emails will still be there in the morning, and the late-night purchase you won’t miss is the one you don’t make.

Final thought

If you find yourself bristling at a piece of your parents’ advice, ask, “What’s the principle here, and how would I apply it now?”

You can carry forward the part that works and translate the rest.

In a world that sells speed and novelty, timeless means durable and it’s the simple stuff that holds, even when life tilts.
