The grocery shelves are stocked with milk alternatives. But do these products have benefits over dairy milk?

You are standing in front of the grocery store shelves. You’re in the dairy department. In addition to cow’s milk, there is a range of milk alternatives. But should you try them? Or, if you have been drinking plant milk for a while, do you know why you do so? Do they offer any benefits over their dairy counterparts? Why choose plant-based milk?

What Is Plant-Based Milk?

First, let’s talk about what plant-based milk is to begin with. An alternative to milk derived from dairy sources, plant milk is made from plants such as nuts, grains, beans, seeds, and more. From almonds and pistachios to walnuts and macadamia nuts, many of these milk alternatives start with a foundation of one or more types of nuts. Alternatively, some plant milk, like oat milk, rice milk, and others, rely on grains for their ingredient base. Then you have bean-based options like the protein-rich soy milk. Seed milk includes flax, hemp, and others. But even if you know what this vegan beverage is made of, why choose plant-based milk?

What Are the Benefits of Plant-Based Milk?

Plant-based milk offers many benefits over its dairy counterpart. For starters, it’s lactose-free, cholesterol-free, and often more environmentally friendly than milk from animals. Additionally, you benefit from all the nutrients present in plants. These can range from vitamin E to protein to calcium, fiber, and others. Just as important as what’s in plant-based milk is what’s not in it. You won’t get any of the hormones or residues from antibiotics that may be present in cow’s milk. Also, most plant milks contain little, if any, saturated fat, unlike cow’s milk which is rich in it. Saturated fat may lead to elevated cholesterol and increased risk of heart disease.
