We’re debunking this age-old nutrition myth!

Even with advancements in nutritional science, the age-old argument that animal protein is superior to plant-based protein remains a hot topic, but we aren’t buying the hype. Better? No. Different? Yes. So let’s set the record straight and dive into how you can optimize your plant protein intake.

So, is animal protein better than plant protein? We don’t think so!

Plant vs. Animal Protein: What’s The Difference?

Origin aside, there are a few differences when we compare plant and animal proteins. For starters, the micronutrient content tends to vary. Although there are exceptions, animal proteins often contain higher levels of heme iron and vitamin B12. On the other hand, plant-based proteins tend to be higher in fiber and antioxidants but lower in saturated fat and cholesterol. But there’s another major difference worth noting. What are these proteins made of and how does it differ?

Both animal and plant proteins are made up of amino acids, the basic building blocks of protein. While there are 20 amino acids in total, nine are considered essential, meaning our bodies cannot make them on their own. Therefore, we need to get these essential amino acids from our diet.

Containing all nine essential amino acids, complete proteins are harder to find in the plant-based kingdom, however, when we opt for a variety of plant-based foods, we can get them all. While food combining is a dated practice—think pairing beans with rice together at a meal—eating a varied diet rich in plant-based protein sources should help reach your daily amino acid tally.

How Plant-Based Eaters Can Optimize Protein Intake

There’s no denying that protein is an important nutrient. It’s responsible for so many bodily processes. And contrary to popular opinion, it doesn’t have to be boring. While most foods contain some ratio of the three macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats, and proteins), high-protein foods include soy foods (tofu, tempeh, soy milk, and edamame), legumes (beans, peas, and lentils), wheat-based seitan, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and certain vegetables.

Rotating through these plant-based protein sources can ensure you’re consuming the essential amino acids and reaping the benefits. Some of our favorite tasty protein sources include buffalo tofu, tempeh bacon, chickpea salad, soy milk and chia seed pudding, tempeh lunch meat, and superfood nutrition shakes! If you’re looking to step up your plant-based protein game with some nutrient-dense convenience, we’ve got the brand for you!
