Trends may come and go, but timeless style has staying power. These pieces endure because they aren’t about trying to impress—they’re about elegance, confidence, and adaptability.

True style, at least in my opinion, isn’t about chasing the latest trend.

Trends are fickle—one year it’s all about neon, the next it’s about muted earth tones. But the pieces that endure? Those are the ones worth building a wardrobe around.

When I look at my own closet, the items I wear most often aren’t the flashy ones I bought on a whim. They’re the staples that look chic whether I’m 25 or 75, and they always help me feel polished, no matter the occasion.

Here are eight essentials that, in my experience, never go out of style.

1. A crisp white button-down

A white shirt is the definition of versatility. Worn open over jeans, it looks relaxed and effortless. Buttoned up with tailored trousers, it’s boardroom-ready.

Jennifer Aniston has practically made this piece her signature, and I can see why. It gives structure without being fussy, and it works with almost any age or body type.

The trick is finding the right cut. For me, a slightly loose fit with a soft drape is ideal—it’s comfortable yet polished.

2. A little black dress

Audrey Hepburn’s famous black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany's wasn’t just a movie moment—it was proof that simplicity can outlast any trend.

I have one that I’ve worn to a cocktail party, a formal work event, and even to a funeral, just by changing the accessories. It’s the kind of item that molds itself to your life.

A little black dress isn’t about being flashy. It’s about letting you be the focal point.

3. Pearls (or their vegan alternatives)

Jackie Kennedy once said, “Pearls are always appropriate”. And she wasn’t wrong—there’s something eternally elegant about the soft glow of pearls.

That said, since I live a vegan lifestyle, I personally avoid real pearls. Instead, I go for high-quality faux versions. These days, you can find alternatives that are so well-made they’re virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. They give you the same classic polish without compromising your values.

Whether it’s a strand around your neck, a pair of studs, or a bracelet, the look of pearls adds quiet sophistication at any age.

And with cruelty-free options, you can enjoy that timeless style with a clear conscience.

4. A well-tailored blazer

Experts have noted that clothes “have profound and systematic psychological and behavioral consequences for their wearers”.

This is definitely true for my blazer! Every time I slip it on, I feel sharper, more intentional.

Princess Diana’s oversized blazers from the ’90s still look relevant today, which says it all. The right cut will last you decades.

5. Dark wash jeans

Trendy jeans come and go. Remember when everyone swore by ultra-low rise?

But dark wash denim in a classic cut? Always in style.

What I love most is how flattering it is on all body types. It lengthens the leg, streamlines the silhouette, and adapts to almost anything you pair with it.

I wear mine with sneakers on market days and with ankle boots for dinners out. It’s the kind of piece that just quietly works.

6. A trench coat

A trench coat isn’t just functional—it’s iconic. Whenever I belt mine, I feel like I should be strolling through Paris, even if I’m just dashing to the store.

It’s sleek, it’s practical, and it layers beautifully over everything from dresses to denim. A neutral shade—beige, navy, or even black—means it will never clash with the rest of your wardrobe.

Burberry may have popularized it, but timeless trenches are everywhere now, and you don’t need to spend a fortune to get one that makes you feel instantly put-together.

7. Loafers

Loafers are the sweet spot between comfort and sophistication. For years, I thought they were too practical to be stylish, but then I tried a pair and never looked back.

Traditionally, leather has been the go-to. Personally, I prefer vegan leather alternatives—they’ve come a long way in terms of quality and durability, and they align with my values.

Whichever route you choose, a sleek loafer instantly elevates your outfit. They’re perfect for all ages, whether you’re new to the workplace or retired and heading out for brunch.

8. A silk (or silk-alternative) scarf

Grace Kelly famously turned hers into a sling for her arm—a reminder that a scarf is far more than just an accessory!

All jokes aside, scarves are wearable art. I often tie them to my handbag or even wear them as a headband when I want to add a pop of color.

Since I avoid silk, I go for plant-based or recycled fabric versions that feel just as luxurious. They soften as you wear them, and many of mine have been with me for years but you do you.

Final thoughts

Trends may come and go, but timeless style has staying power. These pieces endure because they aren’t about trying to impress—they’re about elegance, confidence, and adaptability.

So as you refine your wardrobe, think less about what’s hot this season and more about what will still feel right in five, ten, or twenty years. A few well-chosen staples can give you more confidence than a closet full of fleeting trends.

And that, to me, is the essence of true style.
