West Hollywood embraces Veganuary to promote plant-based eating for a healthier, sustainable future.

This January, the City of West Hollywood invites residents, city staff, and businesses to embrace plant-based eating as part of its Veganuary campaign. This effort, championed by Vice Mayor Chelsea Byers, aligns with the city’s ambitious climate goals and commitment to animal welfare.

A Step Toward Sustainability

At a recent City Council meeting, West Hollywood officially endorsed Veganuary, marking a significant step in its pursuit of carbon neutrality by 2035. The campaign builds on the city’s adoption of the Plant Based Treaty, showcasing how simple lifestyle shifts can reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving public health.

Bryers said, “I am proud to bring Veganuary to the City of West Hollywood! This action is a continuation of the City’s ambitious climate goals and ongoing support for animal rights and welfare. This month, our residents and businesses will come together to participate in this challenge to highlight the health, environmental, and ethical benefits of plant-based diets."

Resources for Residents and City Staff

The Veganuary campaign provides free resources, including recipes, daily tips, and a celebrity-backed cookbook. Participants can join the challenge via Veganuary’s website, inspired by global supporters like Joaquin Phoenix, Alicia Silverstone, and Maggie Baird.

City staff are also encouraged to participate through the Veganuary Workplace Challenge, which promotes sustainability and employee wellness. With guidance from Veganuary, the city aims to enhance staff engagement and support healthy habits.

Local Businesses Join the Movement

West Hollywood’s Economic Development Department is rallying local businesses to participate in Veganuary. Over 400 US businesses joined last year, including restaurant chains like Ike’s Love & Sandwiches and Hard Rock Cafe, which launched exclusive Veganuary menus. Local favorites such as Veggie Grill and The Butcher’s Daughter also offered discounts, inspiring others to follow suit in 2025.

Leading by Example

Veganuary’s US Director, Sandra Hungate, said, “We were so delighted to see the City endorse the Plant Based Treaty and are even more excited to see them implementing Veganuary! West Hollywood is the first US City to run such a comprehensive Veganuary program and we can’t wait to see it roll out this month!"

The Plant Based Treaty LA Team echoed this excitement, highlighting Veganuary’s power to inspire lasting change. With West Hollywood leading the charge, January promises to be a month of delicious, impactful plant-based living.
