LA’s First Vegan Butcher Shop Comes to Highland Park
Maciel’s Plant-Based Butcher & Deli is about to revolutionize LA’s vegan scene.
A Latina-owned vegan butcher shop is preparing to open in Highland Park! Maciel’s will offer a succulent variety of pastrami, bacon, Mexican prepared ribs, and so much more! With plans to open in June, this will be the go-to spot for your vegan summer BBQs.
Vegan Butcher Shop Founder Maciel Luna
Shop founder and creator of plant-based meats, Maciel Bañales Luna, brings LA’s first all-vegan butcher shop to Highland Park. As Luna shares on Instagram, “As we build our space, we’re closer than ever to sharing our delicious plant-based food with you. And we couldn’t be more excited. Stay tuned!” The innovative chef is from Durango, Mexico. This north-central state is known for its abundance of flavor-filled meaty dishes. Luna plans to bring her culture to her new all-plant-based butcher. And we’re here for it! Though this founder-chef has an impressive background with a Ph.D. in Medical Sciences, Luna will use her culinary expertise to serve up delicious vegan deli meat and cheeses.
Maciel’s Plant-Based Butcher
Maciel’s Plant-Based Butcher will be your one-stop deli shop. “We’re excited to be a part of the vegan movement and to join other entrepreneurs creating plant-based butchers around the world. We can’t wait to feed fellow Angelenos our in-house meats, cheeses, and sandwiches!” Maciel shared.
The shop offered a peek at their menu, which includes The Flores. This Mexican-style sandwich features Latine-flavored ribs with pickled onions and fresh arugula on ciabatta bread. And if you’re in the mood for a brighter deli dish, try their Californian Sandwich. Stacked with herbs, vegan turkey, and bacon, this comes topped with creamy avocado. It’s the perfect summer sandwich.

Tikkā is a northern Indian dish involving marinated protein or vegetables cooked in a tandoor, or clay oven. My version is made with marinated tofu baked on skewers in a conventional oven to mimic the traditional cooking vessel, which adds a char and smokiness to the dish. Using smoked paprika further pays tribute to the traditional cooking technique. This tikkā is best served hot with cooling mint chutneys and is delicious in lettuce wraps as well. For lettuce wraps, dice the tofu and vegetables into smaller pieces after cooking and fill the lettuce leaves just before serving.
