The new spot will open in the space previously occupied by the former Avant Garden Bistro on Melrose.
Ubuntu will celebrate its grand opening August 1. The plant-based restaurant highlights the vibrant flavors of West Africa. Helmed by the immensely talented Chef Shenarri “Greens” Freeman, a 2022 James Beard Award semifinalist, 2023 VegOut Awards nominee, and culinary force behind New York’s renowned Cadence, Ubuntu promises to take diners on an extraordinary culinary journey. Created in collaboration with Ravi DeRossi of Overthrow Hospitality, this latest venture is set to redefine the plant-based dining scene in Los Angeles.
Plant-Based African Cuisine
Ubuntu, nestled on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood, is Chef Shenarri’s homage to her own travels and ancestral roots. Her menu showcases a harmonious blend of traditional dishes from countries such as Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, and North Africa. By placing vegetables at the forefront, Chef Shenarri has crafted signature dishes like Jackfruit Yassa, Curry Jollof Arancini, Suya, and a delectable Charred Okra Salad.
African-Inspired Cocktails and Black-Owned Wines
Complementing the culinary adventure at Ubuntu is a thoughtfully curated bar program featuring African ingredients. Spearheaded by acclaimed mixologist Colin Asare-Appiah, author of the groundbreaking book Black Mixcellence: A Comprehensive Guide to Black Mixology, the cocktail menu at Ubuntu is a fusion of innovation and cultural pride.
Enthusiasts can also revel in the selection of wines sourced from Black-owned vintners, showcasing labels such as Aslina, Kumusha, House of Brown, and more. This emphasis on supporting Black winemakers adds a layer of social consciousness to Ubuntu’s dining experience.
Ubuntu’s Enchanting Ambience
As guests step into Ubuntu, they are instantly enveloped in an enchanting ambience reminiscent of a refined garden party. The decor, featuring lush greenery and pops of vibrant yellow, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. Natural materials adorning the walls and lighting fixtures further accentuate the restaurant’s connection to the earth. Ubuntu’s visually stunning environment perfectly complements the tantalizing flavors that await within.
