You can now get plant-based gyros at select locations!

The Halal Guys, a fast food chain that began as a hot dog cart in NYC in 1990, has added vegan gyros to the menu. The new plant-based option features soy-free meatless gyro made from pea protein, brown rice, coconut oil, Halal Guys spice mix, beets, mushrooms, and paprika. Like traditional gyro meat, it’s roasted on a spit and sliced to order. In addition, the chain also released a vegan tzatziki sauce (aquafaba base) for topping. Guests can order the meatless gyro as a wrap or as a platter over rice, which comes served with lettuce, tomatoes, and optional vegan-friendly toppings like tzatziki or hot sauce.

“The launch of our new Meatless Gyro product was inspired by the interest our guests have shown in pursuing a meatless or plant-based diet, even if only on occasion. We wanted to provide them with a delicious, plant-based option, but it had to fit within who The Halal Guys are as a brand. We feel our new Meatless Gyro does exactly that!” Andrew Eck, VP of marketing for The Halal Guys, told VegOut.

In addition to meatless gyros, The Halal Guys also recently added eggplant hummus to the menu, which can be ordered as a sandwich topping, as a side, on a falafel platter, or in catering orders. The eggplant hummus is part of four hummus options the chain introduced this year. At the end of 2021, diners will be able to vote on which of the four will become part of the permanent menu.
