19-year-old Freya Cox is veganizing all the cakes!

2021 has been a great year when it comes to vegan media exposure, and it just keeps getting better! This season’s The Great British Bake Off is hosting its first vegan contestant—19-year-old Freya Cox.

Veganizing The Great British Bake Off

The Great British Bake Off has been a worldwide favorite in its 11-year run. British humor and innovative baked goods is a formula that will rarely fail. But in its twelve seasons, the amateur baking show has never featured a vegan baker. Enter Freya Cox.

Cox is 19 years old and, surprisingly, baking is just something she does in her free time when she’s not modeling for Vauhaus Model Agency, an agency focused on sustainable and ethical fashion. Cox is bringing her plant-based recipes to the show that she’s been watching and aspiring to be on since she was nine years old.

The twelfth season of the show just kicked off on September 21, and Freya did well. She placed second in the technical challenge and wowed the judges with her vegan raspberry & lemon mini rolls in the signature challenge. For the showstopper challenge, the contestants were given the task to create an “anti-gravity” cake, and Cox stepped up to the plate with a towering garden of edible flowers.

While Cox was unable to use vegan ingredients for the technical challenge due to the rules of the show, she has vowed to veganize those dishes once she returns home. All of the dishes that she creates on the show outside of the technical challenges are and will continue to be vegan.

The Great British Bake Off Streaming on Netflix

The Great British Bake Off airs in England on Tuesdays on Channel 4, and viewers in the US can catch it three days later on Netflix (you can find it under The Great British Baking Show). The first episode is available to stream now, and the second episode will be available this Friday, October 1.
