The new menus are a result of Ovolo Hotels’ new Plant’d initiative.

With vegan dishes making their way to menus at mainstream restaurants across the world, it’s about time we see the shift at hotels! This past February, Ovolo Hotels in Australia and Hong Kong transitioned to vegetarian and vegan menus.

Ovolo Hotels’ Plant’d Pledge

Ovolo Hotels is a designer hotel collection with locations in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, and Hong Kong. In October 2020, Ovolo Hotels first introduced vegan and vegetarian menus for their Year of the Veg campaign. For 365 days, all of the restaurants and bars in the eight Ovolo Hotels committed to ditching meat from the menu. Now, the group is permanently transforming all of its restaurants to vegan and vegetarian menus as part of the new Ovolo Hotels Plant’d pledge, which aims to implement a healthier, more sustainable future for its guests, hotels, and the world.

“Meat is being removed for a second year in a row at Ovolo Hotels. With a number of our Ovolo venues already serving plant-based cuisine, we have decided to go the full 100%. It’s been a strategic move, but Ovolo prides itself on being an industry leader. We believe that the world changes, therefore we continue to evolve–we want to ensure we are doing our bit to help preserve our environment, promote healthy eating, and enhance the image of amazing vegetarian and plant-based dining,” said Ovolo Group’s Founder and CEO, Girish Jhunjhnuwala.

Vegetarian and Vegan Hotel Menus

The new vegetarian and vegan hotel menus were put in place at all locations on February 14, 2022, and have already been a hit. All of the restaurant and room service menus were curated by Ovolo’s Creative Culinary Partner, Ian Curley, and Creative Beverage Director, Andrea Gualdi.

“Our move to vegetarian dining has been even more successful than we anticipated, and we now find ourselves part of a new wave of plant-based pioneers. The one big lesson we have learned from our bold experiment: never underestimate your guests. A key focus for us has been ensuring we are creating something that still appeals to everyone—from vegans to flexitarians, and those who are simply keen on expanding their palate,” shared Curley.

The Veg Pledge Playbook

Instead of stopping at the transformation of their menus, the Ovolo team has created a free guide online called the Veg Pledge Playbook. It includes information to educate their guests on why they made the switch and provide tips to other companies in the industry on successfully launching vegetarian and vegan options.
