The woman-owned 100% vegan restaurant is now open.
In the past few years, several beloved vegan restaurants have closed. On the other hand, many new plant-based spots have emerged. One of the most recent closures and openings took place at the same location. In case you missed it: Gegen closed and a new vegan restaurant, The Gray Zebra, took over the space!
The Gray Zebra Opens in East Hollywood
The Gray Zebra is an all-vegan, woman-owned restaurant that opened in East Hollywood on March 14. The focus of the restaurant is inclusivity, which is where the name comes from. Owner Nabiha Basathia recognizes that the way people eat isn’t black and white. From hardcore vegans to omnivores trying a vegan dish for the first time, The Gray Zebra aims to cater to everyone—with an accessible menu of dishes ranging in flavor and cuisine.
Basathia decided to open this restaurant when she got word of Gegen’s closure. As a consultant to many plant-based businesses and a passionate vegan, Basathia knew this venture would align with her skill set, values, and goals. “I want nothing more than to share our love for food and community with the world,” Basathia said.
Chef Alison Cruddas
The Gray Zebra’s menu is curated by the incomparable Chef Alison Cruddas, the former owner and head chef of Bodhi Bowl. Pulling from her global upbringing and 30+ years of experience as a vegan, Cruddas has crafted an epic lineup of dishes, from Curry Fries, Herbed Tofu Sandwiches, and Chipotle Jackfruit Burritos to BBQ Burgers, Caesar Salads, and Green Jungle Smoothies. The Gray Zebra offers both house-made products like smoky tempeh bacon in the B.L.T.A. to well-known meat substitutes like Beyond burgers in their Classic Cheeseburger.
