Movie night, anyone?
Although we love a good vegan documentary, sometimes it’s nice to sit back and watch a narrative film or TV show. If you agree, check out the new vegan comedy feature film, Coffee Wars, that releases later this month!
Coffee Wars Plot Follows a Vegan Coffee Shop Owner
There are many vegan elements to Coffee Wars. For starters, the feature film presents the message of adopting a dairy-free lifestyle to benefit the planet. Other topics include ethical consumerism and female entrepreneurship.
“Our society simply cannot continue to consume planet-crippling dairy products, especially as plant-based alternatives, such as the ones featured in our film, are readily available, healthy for our bodies and the planet and, mostly importantly, delicious,” said Executive Producer Jay Karandikar of Veg Good Films.
The Coffee Wars plot follows a vegan coffee shop owner, Jo, as she tries to keep her business afloat. Dealing with a lot of debt and skeptical customers, Jo enters to win the World Barista Championship. She and her rag-tag crew of colleagues go up against “full fat, full cream” rivals in a dairy-dominated world. Will she prove through her delicious lattes that dairy-free is the way—and win a cash prize to pay off her debts?
Coffee Wars Plant-Based Cast and Crew
In addition to the vegan-centric plot, Coffee Wars features a predominantly plant-based cast and crew. Vegan actress and singer Kate Nash plays Jo. She shares the screen with Derry Girls’ Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Game of Thrones’ Toby Sebastian, and Power of the Rings’ Owain Arthur.
“Coffee Wars brings pressing issues to a global audience in a laugh-out-loud comedic way. It invites viewers to challenge their beliefs about what it means to be an ethical consumer and the overall environmental impacts of their purchases,” shared Nash.
Cruelty-Free Costumes, Hair Products, and Makeup
To round out the production, Coffee Wars used 100% vegan, cruelty-free costumes, hair products, and makeup. All of the milk used in principal photography was plant-based, and the animals used in the movie were either adopted by the filmmakers or released to animal rescue farms.
