Stack enough of those choices in the right direction, and you’re not just surviving anymore. You’re building a life that actually feels alive.

The older I get the more I realize that most of life comes down to the small decisions we make each day.

It’s not the one-off lucky break or some grand life-changing event that defines whether we thrive or just get by. It’s the daily choices—the little ones we repeat—that shape the arc of our lives.

So, what are those choices? Let’s break them down.

1. Choosing growth over comfort

It’s tempting to live inside the bubble of what’s easy. Same routines, same conversations, same environment. But that’s how people stay stuck.

Thriving often means leaning into discomfort. Picking up the book that challenges you. Saying yes to the project that scares you a little. Trying the yoga class where you’ll probably look awkward at first.

Growth doesn’t happen when you’re cozy—it happens when you stretch.

So the real question is: do you choose what’s comfortable, or what will make you grow?

2. Choosing presence over distraction

We live in the most distracted era in human history. Every ping, every scroll, every notification is a pull away from what actually matters.

Those who excel don’t have more hours in the day. They just direct their attention better.

They decide to be fully in the conversation with their partner instead of half-scrolling Instagram. They commit to a focused work session instead of multitasking five different things.

Presence is a choice. And it’s the difference between living your life and watching it pass on autopilot.

3. Choosing health over indulgence

Thriving doesn’t mean never indulging—it means not letting indulgence dictate your health.

That looks like getting enough sleep even when Netflix drops a new season. It looks like fueling your body with real food instead of whatever’s most convenient.

When you consistently choose health, you’re building the foundation that makes everything else in life possible.

4. Choosing curiosity over judgment

Thriving people don’t assume they’ve got it all figured out. They ask questions. They stay curious.

Instead of labeling someone as “difficult,” they wonder what’s driving that behavior. Instead of dismissing an unfamiliar idea, they lean in to learn.

This choice can change everything. A judgment closes the door. Curiosity opens it.

I remember being in Berlin a few years ago and stumbling into a tiny indie gallery. I almost skipped it—it looked odd, not really my style. But I went in anyway, and ended up in one of the best conversations about art I’ve ever had.

Curiosity creates those moments. Judgment kills them.

5. Choosing discipline over excuses

Everyone has excuses. Work is busy. Energy is low. The timing isn’t right.

The difference is, those who move forward consistently don’t let excuses drive the car. They choose discipline—showing up for the run, the journaling session, the side project—even when they don’t feel like it.

I’ve mentioned this before, but discipline isn’t about willpower so much as systems. Thriving people set up habits and routines so the path of least resistance is the one that serves them.

Surviving people wait until they “feel ready.” Thriving people do it anyway.

6. Choosing connection over isolation

Humans weren’t designed to go it alone. But it’s easy to retreat when life gets tough or when the to-do list piles up.

Successful people make the choice to reach out. They invest in friendships. They check in on family. They make time for meaningful conversations.

It’s not about being the life of the party—it’s about recognizing that thriving requires community.

I’ve found even something as simple as taking my camera on a walk with a friend turns into connection that fuels me for days. Those little moments add up.

7. Choosing gratitude over resentment

Every day, we get both options. We can focus on what’s missing or what went wrong—or we can notice what’s already here.

People who get ahead in life don’t ignore problems, but they deliberately choose gratitude. They find the small wins, the overlooked blessings, the tiny joys.

And the science backs it up: experts note that simply giving thanks can boost heart health, reduce stress, and even improve sleep quality.

Resentment is heavy. Gratitude is light. The choice is yours.

The bottom line

In my experience, thriving isn’t about having perfect circumstances. It’s about the seven choices above—repeated over time.

Comfort or growth. Distraction or presence. Indulgence or health. Judgment or curiosity. Excuses or discipline. Isolation or connection. Resentment or gratitude.

Stack enough of those choices in the right direction, and you’re not just surviving anymore. You’re building a life that actually feels alive.

So the question is—what will you choose today?
