The Body Shop is the first global beauty brand to have its full lineup certified by The Vegan Society.
The Body Shop has earned the title of the world’s first global beauty brand to attain 100% vegan certification for its entire product lineup. This significant achievement, certified by The Vegan Society, spans all categories, including skincare, body care, haircare, makeup, and fragrance. Founded on the principle that beauty should not come at the expense of animal welfare, The Body Shop has been a pioneer in cruelty-free beauty since 1989 when it first campaigned against animal testing in cosmetics.
From 60% Vegan in 2021 to 100% Vegan in 2024
Having set an ambitious target in 2021, The Body Shop has successfully transitioned from 60% to a complete vegan product range. This accomplishment underscores the brand’s commitment to championing animal welfare and aligning its practices with the values of conscientious consumers.
“This accomplishment is an expression of our changemaking ethos, and goes back to our roots of championing animal welfare,” said Hilary Lloyd, VP of Brand and Activism, The Body Shop North America. “Offering a 100% vegan certified product portfolio is an achievement we have been working towards for years, and is not one we take lightly. Our hope is that more global beauty brands follow suit and realize the ways in which natural-origin, vegan, cruelty-free beauty can benefit our people and our planet without compromising product efficacy.”
Expanding Horizons in 2024: New Vegan Offerings Await
Looking ahead, The Body Shop plans to elevate its vegan offerings with the introduction of exciting products throughout 2024. Kicking off the year is the launch of Full Magnolia, an addition to the Full Flowers premium fragrance range, available in-store and online from January 15. Additionally, fans of the Peppermint range can anticipate two new body care products, the Peppermint Shower Gel and Peppermint Body Lotion, hitting the shelves on February 12.
Meeting Consumer Demand: A Growing Industry
Responding to the escalating demand for vegan beauty products, The Body Shop’s strategic move aligns with projections that the vegan cosmetics industry will experience a compound annual growth rate of 6.31% between 2023-28, reaching $24 billion by 2028. With over one in 10 young consumers prioritizing vegan in their health and beauty purchases, this pioneering initiative caters to the evolving preferences of the market.
A Rigorous Certification Process: The Vegan Society’s Gold Standard
The Vegan Society, representing the global gold standard in vegan certification, subjected The Body Shop to a meticulous assessment of over 4,000 ingredients across its extensive product catalog. The certification process ensures that every supplier and manufacturer adheres to strict vegan standards, further reinforcing The Body Shop’s commitment to ethical and transparent practices.
Customers can now browse and purchase The Body Shop’s 100% vegan product range online, with the assurance that by fall 2024, all products on store shelves will carry The Vegan Society’s esteemed certification.
