Planet Health Compton

The vegan plaza is entirely Black-owned!

We often talk about food deserts and the lack of nutritious plant-based options in BIPOC communities. But what are people doing to bridge that gap? One entrepreneur created a vegan shopping center in a neighborhood that’s predominantly Black. After announcing its business plans in 2020, Planet Health Compton officially opens this Saturday!

Vegan Options in Compton

Planet Health Compton is the brainchild of Roland Jackson, who transitioned to a vegan diet after suffering a spinal injury from a near-death car accident. Inspired by his own health journey, Jackson set out to find a way to share veganism with those who lack access. He teamed up with former NBA player and vegan entrepreneur John Salley to make it happen.

“Planet Health Compton is born from experiences in my youth. When I was younger, there weren’t any safe places where I could study or be inspired to focus on my community, my diet, or my mindset. Planet Health Compton allows people of all ages to coexist and network with each other while being able to enjoy a healthy meal,” said Jackson.

So, what is Planet Health Compton? A vegan market, restaurant, juice bar, and apparel store all in the same plaza! The shopping center aims to offer vegan options for those who live in Compton and other inner-city communities. With four permanent Black-owned businesses, educational workshops, community events, and pop-ups featuring local vegan businesses, Planet Health Compton is doing such wonderful things for the vegan movement!
