Vegan Playground Changes the Food Festival Game
With every year that passes—heck, every month that passes, there seems to be more and more food festivals. However, it’s not often that someone comes about and alters the identity of your typical food fest. That’s exactly what Diana Colmenar has done with Vegan Playground.
At most food festivals, you show up, eat as much as you can, start to sink into a food coma, and leave a couple hours later. Don’t get us wrong, there’s nothing wrong with that formula, but what if you took the whole “food” part and combined it with live music, physical activities, and—of course—alcohol. Well, that would be something worth spending an entire day on. As far as we can tell, that’s exactly what Diana from Vegan Playground (formerly Vegan Hard) is doing with her Pershing Square Block Party.
To grab people’s attention, she’s made food the main focus of the event. At least, that’s what’s going to get people through the doors, but once they’re in, there’ll be live performances and a plethora of art installations to keep them there. For the food, she’ll have a mixture of OG pop-ups, such as Avocadamama, Man Eating Plant, and Vegatinos, as well as newcomers like Munchies Diner and My Vegan Panda! Aka, a lil’ somethin’ you love and a ‘lil somethin’ new. For entertainment, the main stage will be hosted by Vegan As Fvck and will feature performances by DJ Alexandria, Strange Brew, and emerging R&B artist Dré Tamashi with our very own Ryan Tempfer on drums!
This Saturday (June 15), come grab some grub, browse installations from local artists, jam out by the main stage, and say what’s up to the VegOut team!
Ryan is a cook, writer, and musician born and raised in Tampa, FL. With years of recipe testing for his Asian-American food blog, No Eggs or Ham, behind him, he strives to sharpen the image of vegan food by highlighting chefs who push the boundaries of plant-based cuisine. Unlike the advice your mom lent you, he encourages you to play with your food every chance you get!
