Where Does Dinner Come From? and My Mama’s Milk were inspired by a lack of literature for Black and Brown children. Kawani told VegOut, “WDDCF was inspired by a need for my children to have vegan-friendly books with characters that look like them and by conversations I would have with my daughter in the kitchen. My daughter was always in the kitchen asking me about the origins of the foods we eat.” The book recognizes the importance of plant-based eating to encourage a vegan lifestyle.

My Mama’s Milk was released not long after and addresses the relationship between mother and child breastfeeding. Kawani committed to veganism after becoming a mother and seeing that mammals produce milk to feed their own babies. The books are written based on simple conversations with her children, so they are easy for kids to understand. “WDDCF is for anyone wanting their children to appreciate where their dinner comes and MMM is for families wanting to explore the mother-child breastfeeding relationship or for when new siblings are being introduced to the family!” said Kawani.
