The Louisiana-based bakery Gertie Kay’s has just moved its home base to Los Angeles! Owner and founder Monique Johnson started the bakery less than a year ago in Louisiana using recipes that had been passed down from her great-great-grandmother.
Aside from offering a surplus of vegan options, Gertie Kay’s does an incredible amount of giving back to various BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities. This past holiday season, the brand launched the “Pies FRM Allies” initiative, which enables customers to send a pie to someone in the queer community who is estranged from their friends or family. Gertie Kay’s covered the shipping for over 300 pies sent to queer individuals across 25 countries before the season was up.
Gertie Kay’s is currently running a raffle to raise funds for three single Black mothers that are facing eviction from their Los Angeles homes on March 1st, and the company regularly raises money for Black trans women in need. If you ever needed a reason to order vegan sweet potato pies, white cake, or chocolate chunk brownies (aside from making your taste buds’ day!), look no further than this amazing company doing so much to donate time and resources to those who need it. Gertie Kay’s will be making local Los Angeles deliveries as well as shipping any of their products nationwide. Give them a follow on Instagram at @gertiekays to see what they’re up to next.
