An all-vegan bakery that specializes in authentic Southern flavors, Southern Roots is an online bakery based out of San Antonio, Texas, that ships nationwide.
Cara and Marcus Pitts, the founders of Southern Roots, were inspired to go vegan after watching the documentary What the Health. But after switching their diet to plant-based, Cara found herself wishing for some better vegan baked goods. Always an avid baker, she turned to the kitchen to create her own recipes, and soon her friends and family were encouraging her to open a bakery.
The pair began their business by setting up at local farmers markets, introducing the community to their Southern-inspired desserts with a vegan twist. Their slogan, “So good you won’t believe it’s vegan!” was chosen to encourage members of the community to give the treats a try, regardless of preconceived notions.
The bakery recently saw nearly a 100% increase in sales after several viral articles listed Southern Roots as a black-owned business to support in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement. After being denied benefits as a small start-up and being heavily impacted by the pandemic, this rapid growth couldn’t have come at a better time. Cara and Marcus are grateful for the support, albeit understandably disappointed that it took such a drastic movement for people to back the business.
Thanks to the upsurge in sales, Southern Roots has been filling orders to ship all across the country for months now, and their customers have not been disappointed! Cookies, brownies, cinnamon rolls, donuts, and cakes decorate the menu in a variety of sweet and decadent flavors. It’s important to Cara and Marcus that their desserts can be enjoyed by everyone— particularly those with nut allergies— so the bakery is completely nut-free.
