Owner, chef, and long-time vegan, Tamearra Dyson took a leap of faith when she first opened Souley Vegan in 2006. She had always been skilled in the kitchen but after having her son and creating unique vegan recipes for him, she knew her Louisiana-inspired fare was worth serving to the community. Before opening her restaurant, Dyson worked in a hospital for almost 10 years. “I was only one pre-requisite away from nursing school when I decided to go for my ultimate passion which would mean sacrificing everything I had already worked so hard for. I believed I had something special to offer the world that it had not yet seen,” Dyson shared. “I left the hospital and quit school. Everyone around me said I was being foolish, a single mother with no savings to launch a food business with no prior history in the field. But I had faith in myself, faith in my cuisine, and I knew what I wanted.”
After traveling to Los Angeles for celebrity events and private chef gigs the past three years, Dyson felt it was time to open a restaurant there. And that she did. With the same rich and flavorful dishes that gave them their claim to fame, Souley Vegan’s new location opened on August 8 to serve plant-loving Angelenos. But there’s a twist––the Los Angeles location is available for pickup and delivery only. Indefinitely. Dyson told us this online ordering version of Souley Vegan was ideated in response to the shutdown. “The goal from a young age was to protect and take care of my mother. I was frightened at the thought of not being able to do that. I had to pivot. I had to turn this into something that would keep my beautiful Souley Vegan alive and take care of my family as well,” said Dyson.
So if you’re in Los Angeles and you find yourself craving a plate of vegan Southern comfort food made with house-made vegan meats and cheeses, give Souley Vegan a try! You can place an order on DoorDash, Grubhub, Postmates, Uber Eats, or online at souleyvegan.com. Not in Los Angeles? Tamearra Dyson has her sights set on opening two more Souley Vegan locations in Northern California following this new online ordering model.
“I’ve learned so much and am continuously learning so much more about myself and people. I look forward to teaching what I’ve learned in hopes of inspiring many,” expressed Dyson.
Souley Vegan’s Los Angeles restaurant is located at 615 N Western Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90004 and open 11am-9pm daily.
