NYC’s Whipped Urban Dessert Lab Launches “Taste of Freedom” Vegan Ice Cream Flavor for Juneteenth
Up your vegan ice cream game with this NYC-based shop’s newest flavor!
Whipped Urban Dessert Lab, a Black and female-owned ice cream shop, has released a “Taste Of Freedom” flavor in honor of Juneteenth. The new ice crème variety sells for $13 per 14oz and features an oat milk base, cinnamon spice, and chewy ginger cookie.
The Inspiration Behind the Vegan Ice Cream Flavor
“The flavor is inspired by an excerpt from Booker T. Washington’s autobiography Up From Slavery. Washington was a renowned educator and presidential advisor who was born into slavery but died a free man. The ginger cakes were a dish that Washington desired; something he could relish as a free person. His account is just one example of the inhumanity of slavery and the joys and desires that were forced to lay dormant in enslaved individuals until they were free from the terror of slavery. We use food to celebrate Juneteenth, also called ‘Freedom Day,’ while also recognizing that there is still much work to be done to achieve equality and true freedom for all” Courtney and Zan, co-founders & co-owners of Whipped-Urban Dessert Lab, told VegOut.
What Is Whipped Urban Dessert Lab?
After learning 75% of the African American population lives with lactose intolerance, sisters Courtney Blagrove and Zan B.R. launched Whipped Urban Dessert Lab as they wanted to ensure everyone could enjoy delicious frozen desserts. Their hard-scooped Oate collection features hard-scoop vegan ice cream flavors such as coffee waffle crunch, strawberry shortcake, chocolate peanut butter pretzel, and cinnamon apple crisp. Guests can also create their own unique twist to their order by adding toppings and sauces like peanut butter, chocolate, strawberry, cinnamon spice crumble, sugar cone pieces, and rainbow sprinkles.
Where to Purchase
Those located in the NYC area can pick up ice cream orders from Whipped Urban Dessert Lab’s flagship store at 95 Orchard St in Manhattan. Orders for nationwide shipping can also be placed through Goldbelly.com.
