On Friday, June 19th, The VTree will host a socially-distanced Juneteenth celebration, “An Ode to Black Lives,” with special guests Chika, Mumu Fresh, Ayanna Gregory, and April Sampé. These well-known Black musical artists will lift their voices in solidarity for justice and equality in the Black community.
June 19th, 1865 marks the day the Union soldiers traveled to Galveston, Texas with the news that the American Civil War had ended and all enslaved African Americans were now free. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln two years prior, that document only freed the slaves in the Union states. So after the Civil War ended in 1865, these freedoms were granted to all slaves across the nation. Now, Juneteenth is commemorated nationwide with celebrations that feature music, soul food, prayer services, and more. It is a day to celebrate the freedom and achievement of the African American community.
With the current state of racial inequality in the United States, it’s more important than ever to support the Black community. The VTree is hosting this event in hopes to bring the community together to celebrate and amplify Black voices.
“An Ode to Black Lives” will take place from 5-8pm in the Yamashiro parking lot (1999 Sycamore Ave, Los Angeles, CA). Park, eat, and enjoy the view while live streaming the celebration. A portion of the proceeds from The Vtree sales that day will go to support Our Own Life, a local nonprofit feeding and empowering underrepresented communities. For questions, call 202-413-4083.
