The Black-owned vegan soul food restaurant is expanding!
Los Angeles is full of vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants with innovative menu items, but there are still a few neighborhoods that lack rich and nutritious plant-based dishes. To help fulfill that need, Jackfruit Cafe is opening a second location in South Central LA.
Chef Angela Means Kaaya
Chef Angela Means Kaaya first opened Jackfruit Cafe in Jefferson Park to expose more Black and Brown Angelenos to a plant-based lifestyle. She later moved her business to the Colony in West LA but hoped to one day return to her old stomping grounds.
This summer, a space at a ghost kitchen near USC opened up, and it was perfect for Jackfruit Cafe. Kaaya told VegOut, “My heart’s desire is to serve South LA great vegan foods so when the ghost kitchen opened near USC, I jumped on the opportunity. Plus, my son is a USC Grad student, so it’s a two-for-one deal.”
Vegan Soul Food in Los Angeles
The new Jackfruit Cafe location will feature the same great vegan soul food menu customers know and love from the West LA spot. Some of the hottest menu items include the Jackfruit Burrito Bowl, Smothered Fries, Mac ‘n’ Cheese, and Cauliflower Wings. The most iconic dish is the Jackfruit Soul Bowl which comes loaded with savory jackfruit, mac ‘n’ cheese, black beans, jasmine rice, grilled cabbage, a grilled plantain slice, and cornbread. Mmm, we’re getting hungry!
