GoMacro Brings 100% Renewable Power to Residents in Wisconsin
GoMacro, known for its organic, plant-based nutrition bars, just announced that all residences, businesses, and schools in Viola, Wisconsin, will be powered by 100% renewable wind energy in partnership with the Viola Municipal Electric Utility, the Upper Midwest Municipal Energy Group, and renewable energy advisors. The initiative went into effect beginning with the August 2020 billing cycle.
GoMacro will cover the additional costs of purchasing renewable energy credits (RECs, an energy commodity that attributes value to the green energy attributes of a source of renewable electric generation, such as wind or solar power) for the entire municipality, subsidizing all Viola residents' use of renewable energy. GoMacro has been utilizing 100% renewable energy to power its production facility since December 2018. "With the infrastructure in place for our needs, we saw an opportunity to reach beyond the walls of our facility and make wind power available to everyone in the community that we're proud to call home," said Jola Sonkin, cofounder and CEO of GoMacro.
"We're very grateful for the collaborative effort of everyone involved, and for the opportunity to share the benefits of 100% renewable energy with our neighbors," said Sonkin. "This project is really a testament to the power of companies, communities, and public services coming together to create a more sustainable future for everyone involved. Though it was the first of its kind in our state, we hope this project will encourage other companies to think creatively and use their resources in a way that creates large-scale change both inside and outside their doors."
All GoMacro bars are certified organic, vegan, gluten-free, kosher, non-GMO, raw, and soy-free, including their new kids bar.
Mohini, a born and raised vegetarian from Chicago, initially went vegan when faced with a health issue, but stayed vegan for the animals. Whole food plant-based eating (inspired by traditional Indian culture) is her optimal diet. An advocate for mental health and lifestyle changes, she has a degree in Health Sciences from DePaul University.

Tofu Tikkā Recipe
Tikkā is a northern Indian dish involving marinated protein or vegetables cooked in a tandoor, or clay oven. My version is made with marinated tofu baked on skewers in a conventional oven to mimic the traditional cooking vessel, which adds a char and smokiness to the dish.
