Plant-based eatery by CHLOE. has teamed up with Harry & Ida’s Meat and Supply Co. (a sandwich counter and general store in NYC’s East Village, opened in 2015 by siblings Will and Julie Horowitz) to launch the Carrot Dog—a plant-based hot dog made from a whole carrot that’s been cured, smoked, and aged to mimic the classic hot dog in a natural, vegan version. It’s now available at all by CHLOE. locations across the nation.
After seeing the success of Harry & Ida’s smoked watermelon “ham,” by CHLOE. took the opportunity to help introduce their carrot-based “dog” on a wider scale, collaborating and partnering with the Horowitzs, to launch it officially as the “Carrot Dog” at all their US locations.
“Our goal is to offer our guests clean, yet satisfying, plant-based options without any artificial flavors or foreign ingredients, and the Carrot Dog aligns perfectly with our mission,” said Samantha Wasser, a founder of by CHLOE. “I was completely blown away by Will and Julie’s creativity and knew we needed to work together to introduce the Carrot Dog to the world!”
The Horowitzs create their smoky, carroty dog by handpicking perfectly-sized carrots, and then curing and seasoning them with a blend of seasonings and spices, before then smoking them over local oak and maple wood. This five-day process creates a natural “casing” on the carrot that mimics a traditional hot dog, and from there, the carrot is grilled.
“At Harry & Ida’s, we’ve been playing with whole smoked vegetables for years, and the Carrot Dog took about 1.5 years and 100 iterations to develop,” says Horowitz.
At by CHLOE., the Carrot Dog features Harry & Ida’s Carrot Dog served New York style with Sir Kensington’s Classic Yellow Mustard and sauerkraut, in a potato bun for $6.75. So head over their Silver Lake location, located in Whole Foods 365, to try it out!
