Compton Vegan Cares Initiative to Bring Food and Supplies to 200 Residents in Need

Lemel Durrah, chef and owner of Compton Vegan, has launched a new charity effort to meet the needs of his restaurant’s namesake community. Coined the Compton Vegan Cares Initiative, the program will provide essentials to two hundred Compton residents in need during this uncertain time. Each recipient will receive a Compton vegan meal, a disposable protective face mask, a roll of toilet paper and paper towels, and a case of water. Durrah says this is his small way of giving back to the community that inspired his business. He is funding the initiative by selling Compton Vegan t-shirts which can be purchased online for $10.

Lemel Durrah, chef and owner of Compton Vegan, has launched a new charity effort to meet the needs of his restaurant’s namesake community. Coined the Compton Vegan Cares Initiative, the program will provide essentials to two hundred Compton residents in need during this uncertain time. Durrah told VegOut, “The pandemic has caused me to refocus most of my energy and efforts to make sure the citizens of Compton continue to have a plant-based option as often as possible. Instead of losing workers, we have been able to expand our delivery range and hire a few new team members.”

Compton Vegan began as a pop-up, enticing customers with its Southern-style comfort food—from Buffalo Chik’n & Mac Bowls to Jackfruit Ribz. The business has planted its roots as Compton Vegan Express inside the Colony food hall in West LA and is currently open for pickup and delivery.
