10 Must-Try Vegan Pizza Spots in the United States

10 Must-Try Vegan Pizza Spots in the United States

Feb 10, 2020 BY: Cayla White

2020 is here and vegan pizza is alive and thriving! Thankfully, the days when vegan pizza meant flimsy crust, store-bought tomato sauce, and overcooked veggies that no one actually liked are long behind us. If you made it through the vegan pizza apocalypse, congrats! And if you’re just joining us on your vegan journey, welcome to the party! Here are a few of our favorite spots to grab a slice (or a whole pie) of vegan pizza across the states.

Blackbird Pizzeria

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Blackbird is infamous in Philly for being the spot to get the best vegan Philly Cheese Steak, but the all-vegan Pizzeria doesn’t skimp on its pizza options, either. Blackbird uses Violife mozzarella—one of the gooiest, creamiest vegan cheeses on the market—for their pies. With creative sauces (because you can never have too much sauce!) like pumpkin seed pesto, root beer BBQ, and vegan cheese whiz, their pies aren’t like anything you’ll find elsewhere. Our pick? Try the Cheesesteak Pizza (you are in Philly, after all). Rosemary garlic seitan, grilled onions, green peppers, and that delicious vegan cheese whiz top this pie made with garlic butter and of course, melted mozzarella.

The Chicago House of ‘Za

Chicago, IL

If you say “deep dish” five times … you might get close to an idea of what House of ‘Za serves up. The fully vegan pizzeria prepares its marinara, cashew cheese, and seitan meats from scratch daily, which makes the build-your-own pizza menu fantastic no matter what you get! If you’re there for the deep dish, be sure to give yourself some time. Pies can take up to 45 minutes to come out, but we promise, it’s worth it! If stuffed, deep dish pizza isn’t for you, they also offer thin and tavern-style crusts. Bonus: if you’re gluten-free, they also offer personal-sized pies with a gluten-free crust, but get there early, because they’ll sell out!

Double Zero

Multiple Locations

The fully plant-based pizza chain from vegan chef Matthew Kenney is expanding rapidly, and with good reason! The pies at Double Zero are out-of-this-world creative and savory, with their house-made cheeses like cashew mozzarella and herb macadamia ricotta making these pies unlike any other vegan pizza you’ve ever had. We love the Pepperoni, an upscale throwback to the traditional favorite, and the Potato, because carbs on carbs is always a recipe for success in our book! The restaurant encourages “family style” dining, so bring a group and sample as many pies as you can!

Evel Pie

Las Vegas, NV

An Evel Kneivel themed pizza joint in downtown Vegas? We’re in! Evel Pie just expanded their vegan menu to include five new pies, garlic knots, meatballs, and even vegan chicken fingers! Evel’s pies are heavy on the [vegan] meat, and are made with creamy Follow Your Heart cheese. If you’re more of a veggie fan, opt for the 420. It’s a fungi lover’s dream with shiitakes, portobellos, and white button mushrooms. Our tip? Add garlic and a side (or five) of their creamy jalapeno cilantro sauce … you can thank us later. Bonus: all of their pies can be made on a gluten-free crust!

Li’l Nonnas

Austin, TX

A food truck that was established as a vegetarian pizza joint back in 2016, Li’l Nonnas is now completely vegan! Known for their house-made mozzarella and “beetaroni,” the food truck has a loyal local following, and you do not want to sleep on their specials. One of their latest is a Puttanesca, complete with house-made tomato sauce, Greek veggies, creamy cashew mozzarella, and the real kicker—vegan anchovies made from marinated oyster mushrooms! Don’t mind us, we’re just over here patiently waiting for the brick and mortar to open … In the meantime, the truck is conveniently parked next to a bar, so grab a beer and some friends while you wait for your pie.

Los Angeles, CA (two locations)

The fast-casual pizza place of our vegan dreams! While not fully plant-based, their vegan pies are more than just an afterthought. The Seitan Meats Jesus is essentially a vegan version of a meat-lovers pizza, with vegan bacon, ham, and sausage in every bite. Pizzanista is a great place to go with a group, as everyone can snag a bottle of craft beer or kombucha from the fridge and a slice from the counter before sitting down. Best days to go? On Tuesdays, you can grab a slice of vegan pepperoni or vegan cheese for just $2, and their infamous vegan Macaroni & Cheese pizza is available on Sundays only! Make sure you order a side of their vegan ranch, too.

Plant Based Pizzeria

Atlanta, GA

Plant Based Pizzeria has not only ended the pineapple-on-pizza debate (it’s 2020 folks, anything can go on pizza), but has posed a new debate: do peaches go on pizza? The answer is a resounding yes. Their Georgia Peach pie boasts roasted peaches, Beyond Meat spicy sausage, and jalapenos over vegan mozzarella and basil tomato sauce, and it. is. phenomenal. If you’re not a fan of mock meats, sub out the Beyond Meat for their walnut meat no problem. The Pizzeria has been open just over a year, and their success in Atlanta is only improving. They are take-out only, so call ahead if you know what you want, otherwise check out their absolutely stacked dessert case for something sweet while you wait.

Screamer’s Pizzeria

Brooklyn, New York (two locations)

On a list of the best vegan pizza joints in the nation, Screamer’s will always make the cut. Infamous even on the west coast, Screamer’s has been serving up delicious vegan versions of classic NY style pizza by the slice since 2016. Both locations are fairly small, so if you can’t snag a table, fold up your slice like the locals and go for a walk around Brooklyn. With creative pies like the Reuben and the Fancy Kale, as well as classics like Pepperoni or the Supreme, Screamer’s has something for everyone.

Sizzle Pie

Multiple Locations

If you’re lucky enough to live in the PNW, chances are you’ve eaten at one of Sizzle Pies’ seven locations. If you’re just passing through, let us fill you in. Sizzle Pie, while not entirely plant-based, has an unbelievably good vegan menu. They carry both Follow Your Heart and Violife mozzarella, and all of their signature sauces are vegan, so make sure to order a side or two! If you’re a fan of spicy, we recommend the Buffalo 666, which boasts shredded buffalo jackfruit, veggies, and their house-made vegan ranch and wing sauce over your choice of vegan mozzarella. The best part? Several of their locations are open until 4am, so look no further than Sizzle Pie to satisfy those late-night cravings!

Virtuous Pie

Portland, Oregon

Vegan pizza and vegan ice cream?! Sign us up! The popular Canadian eatery opened its doors in Portland in 2017 and has been a staple in the Portland vegan community ever since. Virtuous Pie serves up personal-sized pies in a fast-casual atmosphere, so if you’re looking for a quick bite, this is your spot! Our favorite? The Sweet Pepper & Sausage, which comes with Italian sausage and an apple juice derived “hot honey,” both made in-house. VegOut insider tip: order a side of their house-made garlic ranch; you won’t regret it!
