The founder, Danielle Tubbs, is no stranger to the kitchen. Growing up, she was the self-proclaimed assistant to two generations of female bakers. Her aunt, mother, and grandmother (Danielle likes to lovingly call them “the Jamaican cake ladies”) were avid bakers, and Danielle learned a great deal from their guidance.

But it wasn’t until well into adulthood that Danielle began baking herself. She loved to bake cookies to share with her friends and family, and when a vegan friend expressed interest in trying her cookies, Danielle quickly developed a vegan recipe so that her cookies could be enjoyed by everyone. Then she made another … and another—and soon the vegan cookies were in such high demand that what began as a small hobby turned into a profitable business, and Tubby’s Taste was born.

The Flavors

Growing up in Miami, Danielle was surrounded by easy access to tropical fruits and island flavors, which has been influential in the curation of her menu. Every one of the cookies is an ode to both Danielle’s lineage and memories of growing up surrounded by these flavors.

The “Speakeasy Cookie” is modeled after her mom’s Fruitcake recipe, with rum-infused raisins clustered together in gooey oatmeal to make for a perfectly spiced finish.

The “Home Sweet Home Cookie” blends mango, coconut, and lime for a flavor explosion that’s reminiscent of Danielle’s own childhood summer days in Miami spent eating mangoes from her neighbors’ yards.

The “Oh. Wow. Yum! Cookie” is modeled after her grandmother’s chocolate tea and includes a blissful blend of dark chocolate and sea salt that will absolutely have you saying “Oh, wow … yum!”

Danielle’s favorite flavor is the new “Tropical Surprise.” Channeling her Carribean roots, this cookie draws its inspiration from sorrel, a Christmas tea native to the area. Each bite is filled with hibiscus, ginger, and lime, and when you order a box with the “Tropical Surprise” cookies in it, you’ll even get Danielle’s personal recipe for a summer version of iced sorrel!

Where to Find Tubby’s Taste

Tubby’s Taste is based out of Chicago, but their subscription boxes ship nationwide. For $29.99/month, you’ll be shipped a dozen cookies of that month’s flavor. Flavors rotate monthly, so you’ll be eating good all year long!

And for the remainder of September, in honor of Danielle’s birthday month, you can order the “Birthday Box,” which contains six cookies in three different flavors. Danielle is donating a portion of the proceeds for this box to two different charities; you can choose which one you’d like the proceeds from your order to go to at checkout.
