Annie’s Homegrown
Best known for their condiments and boxed mac ‘n’ cheeses, Annie’s probably isn’t a brand most people would turn to looking for boxed pancake mix. But, they actually have their own! Their Organic Pancake & Waffle Mix is vegan-friendly and organic, plus they make sure to leave out any artificial flavors, synthetic colors, preservatives, bleached flour, or hydrogenated oils from the mix.
Arrowhead Mills
Organic brand Arrowhead Mills specializes in grains, cereals, nut butters, and organic baking mixes, which include three vegan-friendly pancake mixes. The brand’s Protein Pancake & Waffle Mix, Organic Gluten Free Pancake & Baking Mix, and Buckwheat Pancake & Waffle Mix are all vegan. For each, all you have to do is add your choices of plant milk, egg substitute, oil, and maybe even a little sweetener to the mix and you’re good to go.
Birch Benders
Fully specializing in pancake and waffle mixes, Birch Benders has a total of four vegan-friendly options available. There’s their Plant Protein Pancake & Waffle Mix if you’re looking for a mix with an extra boost of protein, along with their Classic Recipe Mix, Chocolate Chip Mix for the chocolate lovers, and their Blueberry Mix. And best of all, all you have to do is add water!
Bisquick
Surprisingly, a good handful of boxed pancake mixes lots of people across the U.S. probably grew up with are accidentally vegan. Bisquick’s Original Pancake & Baking Mix is one of those. And if you’re looking for something a little lighter or even gluten-free, the Heart Smart and Gluten Free versions of the mix are accidentally vegan as well. Just substitute in your favorite plant milk and egg substitute, and you’ve got yourself your vegan pancake or waffle batter.
Bob’s Red Mill
Natural foods company, Bob’s Red Mill, boasts a huge range of whole grains, beans, seeds, nuts, dried fruits, herbs and spices, and pancake mixes. The company’s Paleo, Gluten Free, Organic 7 Grain, and Buckwheat Pancake Mixes are all vegan. Just grab your favorite plant milk, egg substitute, and oil or vegan butter, and you’re ready to start prepping those cakes and stacks.
Cooggies
Cooggies specializes in crafting non-GMO baking mixes that are not only gluten-free, grain-free, dairy-free (P.S. they’re actually all vegan), but which all contain a hidden veggie in the blend (butternut squash, spinach, sweet potato, carrot, or zucchini). Their Gluten Free Grain Free Pancake & Waffle Mix is a wholesome mix free of added sugars, with added butternut squash. As usual, just add your choices of egg replacer, plant milk, and oil to the mix and you’re all set.
Purely Elizabeth
While mostly known for their granolas and cereals, Purely Elizabeth also offers a selection of pancake mixes—two of which are vegan. Their Grain-Free Pancake Mix is a grain-free (also vegan, gluten-free, and paleo) pancake mix made with chia seeds, tigernut flour, and almond flour. Their Ancient Grain Pancake Mix is a vegan and gluten-free mix made with chia seeds, teff flour, and buckwheat flour. Egg substitute (they suggest bananas), oil, and water are all that needs to be added to each of the mixes to get the batter going.
Simple Mills
Simple Mills focuses on creating grain-free cookies, crackers, baking mixes, and frostings—most of which are also vegan. The brand’s Pancake & Waffle Mix is their take on the classic pancake and waffle, but made simple, with almond flour, coconut flour, and coconut sugar. Additionally, the mix is gluten-free soy-free, corn-free, and free of gums and emulsifiers. All that is needed to be added to the mix are egg substitute, water or milk, and oil.
Simple VGN
The initial idea for Simple VGN came when founder Stacey Sparks-Huff, who had recently gone vegan, was determined to veganize the comfort foods her family loved. After much trial and error to perfect her egg substitute, she launched Simple VGN to offer plant-based comfort foods to the public. The line of baking mixes includes cakes, frostings, and other goods, including a Peanut Butter Protein Pancake and Waffle Mix, along with a Vanilla Cinnamon Pancake and Waffle Mix—both of which are easy to use, only requiring the addition of water to the mix.
Stonewall Kitchen
Specialty food producer Stonewall Kitchen has product lines of several different items, including jams, chutneys, sauces, condiments, and more, along with a ton of different baking mixes. Two of their pancake mixes are vegan-friendly: their Blueberry Pancake & Waffle Mix and their Gluten Free Pancake & Waffle Mix. For both of these mixes, they suggest having milk, egg, and butter available at hand in your kitchen, so obviously, just sub in your favorite vegan substitutes for these.
Trader Joe's
Trader Joe’s stocks a couple pancake and waffle mixes on their market shelves, but only one is vegan-friendly—their Ube Mochi Pancake & Waffle Mix. Ube, the name purple yams go by in the Philippines, is known to be a popular flavor in jams, cakes, candies, ice cream, and more, plus now, pancakes and waffles. The specialty mix, which is also gluten-free, is made with ube puree and rice flour, which results in a sweet and chewy end product. Just add water and your choice of vegan egg and butter to the mix, and you’re good to go.
